What if we stopped measuring the success of culinary education by how many students become chefs?
In this episode, Kimberly I. Houston explores the kitchen as an applied-learning environment where young people can practice literacy, math, science, reasoning, communication, responsibility, and problem-solving while developing confidence in their own ability to learn.
Drawing from more than a decade of teaching young people in kitchens, Kimberly shares what happens when recipes become lessons in sequencing and fractions, muffins become exercises in evidence-based reasoning, mistakes become opportunities for problem-solving, and educators pay close enough attention to recognize abilities students may not yet see in themselves.
The kitchen cannot solve every challenge facing education. But it can give students another place to learn, grow, create, and discover what they're capable of.
Not every student who enters a culinary classroom will become a chef.
And that's not the only measure that matters.
